The sweets of Sardinia
The "Sospiri"
The "Sospiri" (the most famous are the ones produced at Ozieri) is a kind of sweet shaped like little, slightly flattened balls. They are made of minced almonds, sugar, lemon and orange flowers' water. These delicious sweets, as big as a walnut, are packed one by one with a very coloured tissue paper indented at its extremities. A long time ago it was tradition to offer them at children's buptisms to all those who made presents to congratulate for the event. Some of the Ozieri's confectioners have apported some changes to the traditional recipe by aromatizing the almond dough with myrtle liqueur or by covering the sweets with sugar icing or fondant chocolate.
Among the other characteristic sweets it is worth mentioning "S'Aranzada", made of orange skin. It is cooked in the honey and, in the end, covered with almond stripes; Oristano's "Mustaccioli"; Belvì's "Caschettes", also called "The Bride Sweets"; the "Papassinos"; the "Tilicas", stuffed with cooked wine or honey; the soft "Amaretti" and the famous "Torrone di Tonara".
